Get Involved
Want to join the excitement, learn what it takes to get the balloon in the air and be part of the chase crew?
Crewing for a hot air balloon is hard work, but it is also very rewarding. Volunteering as a crew member for the Liberty Bell Project offers the opportunity to meet new people, learn a new skill, and do something that gives back to our vets and military personnel.
It usually takes 3-4 crew members plus the pilot to put a balloon in the air. Flights can occur year round – always in good weather. On weekends, flights might occur in the early morning or early evening. During the week, flights would occur in the early evening. Not everyone can help all the time, so you will not be expected to crew a certain number of times. Plan to spend about 3 hours per flight for setting up, the flight, the chase, packing up, and the landing celebration.
Required: the ability to follow instructions and help lift/carry heavy materials such as the balloon basket.
Crew members are asked to wear long pants and closed toe shoes (sneakers or boots work well). Long sleeve shirts are preferred, but short sleeves are fine too. Just make sure nothing has loose strings (like hoodie strings) that can get caught in the equipment. Leather work gloves are required, but will be provided if you do not have your own.
